An Indie Artist Redefines Creative Flow

For a decade, independent artist AYOTEMI has quietly honed a craft that defies traditional music industry norms, eschewing an official website for a comprehensive pitch deck and building a multi-faceted career around his boundless creativity. At 28, the Nigeria-born singer and songwriter is emerging from a period of intense artistic development, ready to share his unique sound and philosophy with the world.
AYOTEMI, who boasts over 10 million streams on his track “Surrounding,” that garnered over 2M in streams, is not just an artist but also an educator and mentor. He offers music mentorships, facilitates work programs, and has authored e-books on topics ranging from “How to Freestyle” and “Never Run Out of Words” to rap and speech writing. His deep understanding of the creative process stems from a personal breakthrough: cracking the code to never experiencing writer’s block.

“I’ve been limitless when it comes to writer’s block,” AYOTEMI states, a testament to his decade-long journey as an indie artist. While he may not have extensive stage speaking experience, his innate ability to connect and articulate is evident in his written works and his involvement towards educating musical talent on how to freestyle and never run out of words to use when writing music.
“Since I was a baby, I had the rhythm.” AYOTEMI explains that his musical journey began in infancy.
He recalls, reminiscing about singing in his car seat and banging on walls with drumsticks. At around 14, an “audible epiphany” struck when he truly liked the sound of his own voice, solidifying singing as his primary passion. Born in Nigeria, he spent his formative years immersed in a culture where language itself is built on tonal differences, an experience he credits with his natural affinity for melody and rhythm.

Upon returning to the States, AYOTEMI’s talent blossomed. In his sophomore year, he performed Miguel’s “Sure Thing” with his R&B group Sounds of The Soul at a high school talent show.
“The crowd went crazy, and it was the first time I experienced that,” he says, describing the thrill of a live performance and where his vocal training was further nurtured through church and school choirs.
A profound spiritual experience at 17-years-old deeply influenced his path. During a prayer retreat, seeking divine guidance regarding his use of cannabis, AYOTEMI had a transformative moment.
“We were singing praise songs and I fall to the ground crying in a fetal position, speaking in tongues. A voice told me ‘You are a minister’ three times.” AYOTEMI says that this powerful revelation reshaped his understanding of sin, shifting it from punishment to a framework for living a fulfilling life.
From that moment, he embraced his calling as “a conduit, an instrument from God for divine frequencies on this plane.” This spiritual alignment fueled his pursuit of a B.A. in Music Business, and he began making music professionally during college. To date, he has released one collaborative album, one solo album, five to seven EPs, and numerous singles, amassing “hundreds of records.” His recent release, “Vitamin Girl,” dropped in early March 2025 and has garnered 5,000 streams.
The last two years have seen AYOTEMI immersed in creative development, including residencies in Bali and a festival appearance in Thailand. This period has been dedicated to “preparing my body and mind to start touring, performing bigger shows.” AYOTEMI’s artistic vision is distinctly global.
Reminiscent of world artist such as Paul Simon and Garfunkel who did works with Mbaqanga to more modern afrobeat sounds like Wizkid or BurnaBoy. One of our favorite and newer songs AYOTEMI released, “Happiness“ is one of those songs that will literally pick up your attitude and excel it straight into happiness and immediate dance. One song from my childhood, “Don’t Worry, Be Happy“ that was released by Bobby McFerrin (1988) on his album, “Simple Pleasures,” demonstrates similar emotions while listening to each track. In the video, you can see AYOTEMI dancing and basically being “happy!”
“Happiness” is AYOTEMI’s rhythm medicine, an Afrobeat’s-infused song designed to shift listeners from socially-performed joy to authentic inner peace and reconnect them with genuine contentment. It serves as an antidote to algorithmic emptiness, offering a real and healing experience through irresistible rhythms.
“The sound I am creating is very global – the vision of my music will reach all corners of the earth,” he explains.
He aims to create diverse music, from pop to ballads, with an intentional approach to packaging and presentation. His Nigerian roots, where language inherently utilizes tonal differences to convey mood, continue to be a wellspring of inspiration, making singing a deeply natural form of expression.
With a decade of independent artistry and a clear, spiritually grounded purpose, AYOTEMI is poised to make a significant impact on the global music scene, proving that true creative freedom comes from within.
