For over three decades, the brotherhood of Bored Stiff has navigated hip-hop’s struggles and triumphs. Rising from San Francisco’s streets in 1992, their journey from cipher circles to survival forged an amazing history, leaving a sound and spirit that still echoes today and can be seen in their documentary, “Sounds Like My Life: The Story of Bored Stiff.”
Before cell phones and the internet took over the world, in the heart of San Francisco (SF), a few beepers buzzed in the pockets of those who became Bored Stiff. Their goals were simple: to plan, hope and show up for the threads that wove their lives together, just for the chance to create something new, something fresh.
“We all came together back during the early years back when I was DJing.” Bored Stiff Producer, TD Camp shares, “Hip-Hop, that was the music of our generation. People really loved it back then. It wasn’t about what they could get out of it.”
Known for their classic underground Hip Hop sounds all over the world, Bored Stiff, also known as ‘The Stiff’ came up as a brotherhood in the sense that each of their parts could be put together to create a collage of sorts, full of samples and raw, original sound. According to TD Camp, the crew recorded early whispers of underground Hip Hop, capturing the moments that were not actually realized at the time. The first time I came across Bored Stiff, I fell in love with their seemingly Golden Era rhymes, with beats and production by TD Camp.

Back when Bored Stiff was just getting started, there were sprouts of the promise of what their crew eventually evolved into. Some of the members were still in primary school or high school and were in different mini crews like Shades of Rhythm (Equipto, P Champ [AKA P-Whaley] and TD Camp) who received label offers from many top labels between 1990-1992. Also included in Bored Stiff was Top Notch (Big Shawn, Minty Rock and Liel Shawn). Separately, White Mic and Kwanz (K-Dubb) were mutual friends and came on board. Between all of these artists plus SF rapper, San Quinn and FDOG (Fred) and some others, X Legion was created. Then there was The Hoodies…much before Bored Stiff hit the stage as a crew.
According to TD Camp, he met up with Equipto and Big Shawn and Fred at George Washington High School. A young TD Camp was already DJing and then the small team brought more people together and eventually used his house to record music before getting the music knocked out in a professional music studio in the early days.
“There was this beautiful chaos around us; the city was grinding, the world changing and somehow, through it all, we carved out our own space – a sacred beat, a fleeting joy and a brotherhood bound by sound.” TD Camp tells.
The Past: UBO MAG & Bored Stiff
Golden Era was the time I grew up in too and because of it, I founded UBO MAG in 2001. Connecting with Bored Stiff in 2006, because of their style, rhymes and lyrics during this time, solidified my purpose behind all of the stories I wrote and the network I built through UBO MAG.
The brotherhood – I had this crazy idea to bring together Hieroglyphics, Living Legends, Bored Stiff (all from The Bay Area), The CUF (Sacramento, CA) and Dirty Rats (Arcada, CA) all together to have a dope Hip Hop crew event in 2006. Little did I know that a lot of these guys were already connected in different ways. When Hiero Day happened a few years after that, it felt good knowing there was an event for Hip Hop fans for all of Northern CA and especially in The Bay Area.
I began to get involved with Bored Stiff because I loved their music, how fun it was, uplifting and just real-life. The more I got to know them and worked on reviewing their music for various Sacramento publications and in UBO MAG, they sent me a box of their CDs to shop around to Sacramento DJs which I did and soon after, they were performing a lot more in Sacramento after 2006. I always wanted to work with this crew.
Sounds Like My Life
Back in the early ’90s, in the heart of San Francisco,Before cell phones, before the world sped up —
Just a few beepers buzzing in our pockets —
We found our way to each other.
We had to plan, to hope, to show up,
Threading our lives together for the chance to create.
In those cracked and golden hours,
We recorded early whispers of underground hip hop,
Capturing moments we didn’t yet realize was magic.
There was a beautiful chaos around us —The city grinding, the world changing —
And somehow, through it all, we carved out our own space,
A sacred beat,
A fleeting joy,
A brotherhood bound by sound.

In 2010, I threw the mini-mini version of this bigger event at Laughs Unlimited featuring Equipto, Z-Man, Michael Marshall and Crush (The CUF) who also hosted the event with his natural comedic antics. I remember that Z-Man, Equipto and Mike Marshall brought out a huge vinyl wrapped tour bus and parked it outside of the comedy club. For the first time in my experience booking shows, this event felt special and pretty darn important, even if the house was not packed out.
FAST FWD 2025: Bored Stiff Doc
The documentary, “Sounds Like My Life: The Story of Bored Stiff,” was on the verge of release in theatres UBO MAG reconnected with White Mic, TD Camp and Equipto (Bored Stiff). I believe in these guys and their story is a mixture of gains, losses, grief and blessings. The crew went through a lot from making babies to losing members of their crew along the way. It is a story that all of us in Hip Hop can resonate with, our crew, our people.
“It captures a Hip Hop scene built on pure craft and the restless hunger to create something unique, honest and timeless. A sound heavy with soul, stitched from rare grooves and lived experience.” TD Camp explains.
“Sounds Like My Life” is a documentary about a time, city and a sound born out of SF’s underground in the late ‘80s and ‘90s. It captures a Hip Hop scene built on pure craft and the restless hunger to create something unique, honest and timeless, according to TD Camp.
“This film is about more than music. It’s about growing up in a city full of contradictions—beauty and struggle, gentrification and graffiti, rhythm and resistance,” said White Mic (Michael Adams) Bored Stiff member and Co-Director of “Sounds Like My Life.”
Beyond just a musical chronicle, the story of Bored Stiff traces the lives of standout young artists who found more than a band; they found family through their beats and rhymes. Their ascent, traveling the world on the merits of their craft, illustrates the tenacity required to clutch dreams in an environment as captivating as it was harsh. What emerges is a powerful testament to creation, marked by periods of loss, yet underscored by an unyielding resilience and the enduring sonic footprint of a scene that carved its own unforgettable legacy.
Bored Stiff has already had two showings in San Francisco at the Roxie Theater and Black & Brown Social Club on June 1 and New Parkway Theater in Oakland, CA on June 8. In addition, Bored Stiff will be in Sacramento at Tower Theater on June 25 (and UBO ENT will be in the building) and at The Cat’s Crawl in Los Angeles, CA on July 20.
