Austin, Texas-based singer-songwriter, Autumn Cymone-Vanderveer, known for her sweet and dark blend of 1980s and 1990s R&B and nuanced acoustics simply tells the truth in her music, allowing others into what she is thinking and how she moves.
She is giving vibes with, “Silence,” a song written so Autumn Cymone can take five on all of the attention. Someone who thinks inward-outword, allows her listeners to sense her strife, dealing with people in her life, maybe even her screaming fans.
“Why they always yell and scream my name, I don’t think they like me anyway, Why they always yell and scream my name, I don’t think they like me anyway, Turn out the lights, Silence is a friend of mine.
Easy said, just to go and rest my head, yea Empty thoughts, they all wait for me in bed, yea I can’t be the rock everybody needs, when I need to learn how to be there for me”
“Silence,” written by Cymone and Bruce “Automatic” Vanderveer (who also produced the song) for Inrage Entertainment. The music video was produced by Damien Sandoval and directed by Automatic and Ebony Rae Vanderveer. This electric video opens with Cymone in the mountains, covered in snow; the video is shot in black-and-white or blue-toned to evoke the emotions she is conveying. Perhaps she doesn’t want the attention on her, even though she is a super talented, beautiful singer with a mohawk braid.

The song itself is reminiscent of a more rhythmic version of Alanis Morissette. It shows that she is looking for herself in a space that is wide and open; nuanced, without the noise all around her. “Silence” is a vulnerable song, something that she is familiar with in her powerful songwriting. Her music is influenced by artists such as Prince, Erykah Badu, Betty Davis and Astrud Gilberto – which is more than easy to see through her music and video itself.
Although, starting this review, it seemed like the pressure to perform has gotten to a young Cymone early in life – however, as KUT, the Austin, TX NPR station broadcast from the University of Texas in Austin, described her, she is known for her “authentic and vulnerable songwriting.”
Mental health awareness is a significant theme for Cymone, evident in her song “Silence.” She has expressed her commitment to encouraging those facing mental health challenges through her music’s empowering and heartfelt lyrics.
